Des Moines Register GC OBITUARIES ALMANAC Tuesday, June 26, 2001 Page 5B CHARLES SMITH HOYT NAYLOR Urbandale Des Moines Charles Lavaughn "CL" Smith, 85, of the 8100 block of Rocklyn Drive in Urbandale died of a stroke Sunday at home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McLaren's Funeral Chapel, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Mr. Smith was born in Indianapolis, and had lived in the Des Moines area since 1950.

He was a retired Drake professor and had formerly taught at Rocky Mountain College. He was a Navy veteran of World War Il and a member of First Baptist Church, Oriental Research Society, Scholars Oriental Research, Oriental Society, and the Association of Biblical Instructors. He was a U.S. Naval chaplain, a Protestant chaplain for the Des Moines Police Department, a former chief timer for the Drake Relays and had received recognition for service to the Drake community. He was a two-time recipient of the Drake Liberal Arts Humanities Award and had authored a Greek-Aramaic glossary of the Gospel of Mark of the New Testament.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; a daughter, Mary Carol of Urbandale; a son, Charles of Rhododendron, and three grandchildren. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Drake University, First Baptist Church, or Yale Divinity School. BARBARA DUNAH0O Nevada Barbara Dunahoo, 80, of Nevada died of a lung ailment Sunday at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Services will be 2:30 p.m.

Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery there. Mrs. Dunahoo was born in Colo and had lived in Nevada most of her life. She had worked for Graphic Forms in Nevada and was a member of First United Methodist Church there.

She is survived by five sons, Larry Dunahoo of Nevada, Leo Dunahoo of Story City, Darrell Dunahoo of Mattoon, Don Dunahoo of Glenwood, and Marvin Scherr of Ames; a daughter, Joyce Ridgway of Nevada; a sister: Bernice DeHart of Council Bluffs; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Memorial contributions may be made to Homeward Hospice.

ETHEL MEIKLE Ackley Ethel Marie Meikle, 83, of Ackley Presbyterian Village died of a heart ailment there Saturday. Services will be at 10. a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parkersburg, of which she was a member.

Burial will be at the church cemetery. Miss Meikle was born in Chicago and had lived in Parkersburg before moving to Ackley. She was a retired secretary for John Deere in Waterloo and a member of her church's Altar and Rosary Society. She was a state bowling champion for several years. There are no immediate survivors.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church, where a wake will be held at 7 p.m. Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center is handling arrangements. Obituaries: 4B, 6B FORMER RESIDENTS Here is information about the deaths of former central lowa residents who moved from the area more than 20 years ago: Marie Bender, 83, of Rockaway Beach, died of a heart ailment there Saturday. Wednesday at Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville. Mrs. Bender was born in Eldorado Springs, and had farmed in the Swan area before moving to Missouri in 1963. She was a retired nursing home dietitian. Dorothy Maxine Davis, 77, of Orange, died of a heart ailment April 30 at home.

The body was cremated, and a memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Cemetery in Churdan. Mrs. Davis was born in Adaza and had moved to California in 1948. She was a retired book store manager.

MARGARET PRICE Altoona Margaret Price, 97, of the 100 block of North Hawthorne Drive in Altoona died of a heart ailment Sunday at Parkridge Manor there. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Humphrey Funeral Home in Russellville, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery there. Mrs.

Price was born in Dover, and had lived there and in Michigan before moving to Altoona last year. She was a homemaker and a member of Simpson United Methodist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Norma Gilman of Altoona and Sharon Purchis of Bowling Green, a sister, Vivian DeWaters of Russellville, 13 grandchildren; and 32 greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman. A local memorial service will be held at a later date at her church.

BERT SMITH Prairie City Bert Leroy Smith, 78, of Prairie City died of pneumonia Sunday at Clearview Manor there. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born in Marion County and had lived in Des Moines most of his life before moving to Prairie City in 1994. He had owned and operated Bert L. Smith Trucking. He is survived by a son, David L.

Mr. Naylor was born in Greene County and had lived in Des Moines all his life. He had owned and operated Hoyt Naylor's Body Shop before retiring in 1989 and was a member of Acanthus Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed woodworking and stained glass. He is survived by two sons, Ray of Des Moines and Earl of St.

Louis; a daughter, Elsie Naylor of Des Moines; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Merle Hay Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to his church or the Door of Faith Mission.

She displayed her bubbly personality for all to see. Her great joy was working part-time at Consultec as a clerk. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, music and trips to Prairie Meadows.
