A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Ellen H. Boda, 88, of Slater, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m.

Monday, May 6, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater, with Pastor Heidi Williams officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and St. Pius Catholic Church. She will be missed by her husband of 60 years, Howard Smith of Urbandale; three daughters, LuAnn Smith of Long Beach, CA, Pamela Krueger of Omaha, NE, Rebecca (Kevin) Rastofer of Phoenix, AZ; a son, Steven (Kim) Smith of Bellingham, WA; six grandchildren, Stephanie (Fred) Nguyen, Ashley (Tony) Vachal, Angela Rastofer, Joe Smith, Bryn Smith, and Madison Smith; four great-grandchildren, Amelia Bergman, Alayna Vachal, Rilynn Nguyen, and Annastyn Vachal; sister, Rachel Durham of Romeo, MI; and many relatives and friends. Billie was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Mabel Gill; brother, Jack Gill; son-in-law, Greg Krueger; and grandson, Cole Krueger. Boda on February 15, 1947, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She and Don raised their family on a farm in rural Sheldahl. She was a homemaker and member of the Slater Legion Auxiliary, Sheldahl Cemetery Auxiliary, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Slater Historical Society and the Polka Dots Polka Club. Ellen played the accordion and also enjoyed cooking, flowers, bird watching and spending time with her family and friends. She was also proud of her Swedish heritage.

Ellen is survived by her daughters, Mary Tomlin-son (Boyd Antill) of Huxley, and Monica (Bill) Volz of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren, Ryan Tomlinson (Paul Mason), John Tomlinson, Eric Volz and Tracy (Dan) Wallach; great-grandchild, Nina Wallach; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale (Dorothy) Lund and Alvin (Barbara) Lund. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister and brother-in-law, Ruth (Arnold) Alleman; and her brother and sister-in-law Lloyd (Ruth) Lund and brother Roy Lund. Cooper, 66, of Roscoe, ended his courageous fight with cancer on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at home. Born October 4, 1946, in Des Moines, son of Louis and Dolores (Dobson) Cooper. Graduated from East High School, Class of 1965.

Retired from Titan Tire in 2012. He was a 43 year member of USW Local 164. Danny loved spending time with his grandchil Rose Martina Carroll passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at her home with her loved ones by her side. Rose was born on January 13, 1924 in Churchville, IA, to Joseph and Julia (Waldron) Harkin. Those left to cherish Rose's memory are her children, Rose Ann Gill, John (Bernice) Carroll, William (Jackie) Carroll, Dennis (Pennie) Carroll and Rita Carroll; her brother, James Harkin; her sister, Honora Kirvin; fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and numerous other loving family and friends.

Monday, May 6, at the Basilica of St. John with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery. Joe was born in Des Moines to Michael and May (Sweeney) Hansman. He attended Holy Trinity Grade School and graduated from Dowling High School in 1953. Joe married Lucille Farao in 1955 at St.

John's Catholic Church in Des Moines. Together they had three sons, Micheal, Joseph, Jr. and Frank. He retired from Roberts Dairy where he was a milk man for 34 years. Joe could be counted on for anything needed.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, sons, Michael and Joseph, Jr. and his siblings, Mary Benshoof and James E. Hansman. He is survived by his son Frank (Melanie) Hansman, his grandchildren, Frank, Michael and Jacob Hansman, Hillary (fiance, Jason Hacker) Hansman and Matthew Hansman; his sister Kathleen E. Callahan and numerous nieces and nephews.

She attended St. Jospeph Academy, Maryville College and Upper Iowa University.

She was a ParoleProbation Oficer for the Iowa Department of Corrections. She enjoyed her work tremendously and also loved good humor. She moved to Chatsworth, CA, in October 2011. She passed away on 24 March 2013, from Ovarian Cancer.
